Knight Capital Group, Inc. (January 21, 2010) (Nasdaq: NITE) today posted monthly U.S. equity volume statistics for the month of December 2009 on its web site.
For the month of December 2009, the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite Index increased 0.8 percent, 1.8 percent and 5.8 percent, respectively.
“December witnessed the continuation of a year-end decline in broad U.S. equity market volumes,” said Thomas M. Joyce, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Knight Capital Group, Inc. “Aside from interest generated by large secondary offerings from a few banks to repay TARP, trading activity was light. At Knight, we continued to grow trade volumes compared to year-ago levels due to market share gains in trading of Listed and NASDAQ stocks.”

Average daily dollar value traded in December 2009 was $21.9 billion, down approximately 11.0 percent from $24.6 billion in November 2009 and up approximately 19.9 percent from $18.3 billion in December 2008.

Average daily U.S. equity trade volume in December 2009 was 3.2 million, down approximately 11.6 percent from 3.6 million in November 2009, and down approximately 4.0 percent from 3.4 million in December 2008.

Average daily U.S. equity share volume was 11.1 billion in December 2009, down approximately 15.4 percent from 13.1 billion in November 2009, and up approximately 154.9 percent from 4.3 billion in December 2008.

There were 21.5 trading days in December 2009, 19.5 days in November 2009 and 21.5 days in December 2008.
